WHITELAW, Diane Margaret - Passed away on May 20, 2008 at Albright Manor, Beamsville, just before her 90th birthday. Sadly missed by her children, Thomas of St. Catharines, ON, Christopher (Mary) of Elliott Lake, ON and Anne (John) Whitelaw-Dykes of Roberts Creek, BC and by her brother, Christopher (Jenny) Barton of Basingstoke, England. Predeceased by her husband, James (1982) and by her sister, Elizabeth (2005). Diane was born May 23, 1918 in Oxford, England and spent her early life in London, England. She received her secondary education in Switzerland before attending the University of Vienna where she studied child psychology. Returning to England after the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938, Diana joined the staff of Dr. Barnardo's Homes working in East London with children in need. In June 1939, Diana crossed the Atlantic to Canada, chaperoning children fleeing the anticipated war. Unable to return to England when the Second World War started, she worked as a teacher in Ottawa. Diana spent a summer in Niagara working on a fruit farm where she met and later married her husband, James. Together Diana and Jim ran the Whitelaw Fruit Farm in Beamsville for over 35 years and raised their three children. Throughout her life, Diana pursued her commitment to charitable work providing support to many foster children around the world and volunteering for many years with the local Community Care Charity. Later in life, Diana travelled extensively. In addition to exploring Canada, Europe and the Caribbean, she undertook study trips to Israel and China. Diana always kept strong links with her brother Christopher's and sister Elizabeth's families and other relatives and dear friends in England, Australia and throughout the world. She had many friends in her local community through her involvement in the Women's Institute, Community Care and the Lincoln Study Group. Diana became a resident of Albright Manor eight years ago when failing eyesight limited her activities. Her family is grateful for the care and attention given to her by all the staff and volunteers at Albright. A long and eventful life of loving, giving and learning has come to a peaceful end. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to the CNIB or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Arrangements are being handled by TALLMAN FUNERAL HOMES, Beamsville. 11105460
