Diane Carnes of Tinton Falls, N.J., passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 14, 2014, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Visitation will be held at Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank, N.J., on Monday, Aug. 18, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service officiated by Reverend Steven Kengeter will be held at 8:30 p.m. Interment will be private. Diane was born to Charles and Rose Whinfield in Perth Amboy, N.J. After her marriage to Edward L. Carnes, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired), she embraced the life of an Army wife, following her husband to his assignments in Ft. Hood, Texas; Germany; Fort Lee, Va.; Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Fort Monmouth, N.J., finally purchasing a home of their own in Tinton Falls. There, they raised their family and resided for over 34 years. Diane attended Raritan High School (class of 1964). With many fond memories, she was instrumental in planning and reservations for upcoming events while serving on the reunion committee. Her career in the defense community of Fort Monmouth began with her employment as a purchasing agent with BDM, later transitioning to SYTEX and MACB-ESI. Diane served as the treasurer of the Fort Monmouth chapter of AFCEA (Armed Forces Communications Electronics Association) for 25 years. She was the registrar for the AFCEA monthly luncheons at Gibbs Hall, as well as registrar of the annual C4ISR symposium and the State of CECOM annual luncheon. Her numerous citations and awards from AFCEA included "AFCEAN of the Year," "AFCEAN of the Quarter," and the Dandelion Award. Diane served on the board of the AUSA (Association of the United States Army), Fort Monmouth Chapter, as editor of the quarterly newsletter. She was a committee member of the Fort Monmouth "Support Our Heroes" Gala, a fundraiser for The Fisher House Foundation, Inc., serving as registrar and event planner. Diane was awarded the Silver Wahatchee from the Signal Corps Regimental Association for her years of service to the United States Signal Corps. She served on the committee of the annual Field Artillery St. Barbara's Day Dinner Dance, and was a recipient of the Molly Pitcher Award for her countless hours of dedication to the association. Diane was an avid bowler and a member of the Fort Monmouth Bowling League for many years, serving as treasurer of the league. A Disney fan, Diane happily traversed the parks at Walt Disney World on yearly vacations, enjoying her favorite rides, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. She loved her days at the beach as a member of Driftwood Cabana Club (Cabana 224) in Sea Bright, N.J., counting the days to Beach Club opening. Diane enjoyed planning the menus for weekend dinners at the Cabana, surrounded by her friends and family. Diane enjoyed her regular "Jersey Girl" lunches, sadly less and less often as the Fort Monmouth BRAC was implemented and the Jersey Girls relocated and retired. She leaves to mourn her, her husband, Edward L. Carnes; and her children, Phil and his wife, Rachel Carnes, Tinton Falls; Susan and her husband, Hugh Bremmer, Howell, N.J., and Eddie Carnes, Tinton Falls; and her adored grandsons, Stevie Bremmer and Seamus Carnes. Diane was lovingly assisted by her family, her friends, and the staff of St. Barnabas Hospice. Anyone who wishes to donate in remembrance of Diane may contribute to The Fisher House Foundation, Inc., 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, Md. 20850, www.fisherhouse.org.
