WATERVILLE -- Diane Arlene Brown, 87, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2013, in Waterville, under hospice care and surrounded by her family. She was born in Malden, Mass., on March 27, 1926, the daughter of Louise Marguerite (Hodgkins) Main and Ralph Griffin Main. Diane graduated from Traip Academy in Kittery in 1944 and earned her R.N. at Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett, Mass., in 1947. She began her married life in Vanceboro, and lived most of her adult life with her family in Calais. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star, acting as mother advisor to the Calais chapter of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Diane worked as supervisor of the maternity ward at Calais Regional Hospital, and later for Downeast Health Services as a home health nurse for the Well Baby program. Diane discovered her artistic abilities in oil painting after retiring with her husband, Lindy, in Punta Gorda, Fla., in 1990. But her greatest joy was her children and grandchildren and, of course, helping others to bring their children into the world.Diane never lost her love for Maine and returned to Calais in 2007. She was delighted to be welcomed home by familiar faces and especially to be reminded, "You were there when my children were born."Diane was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, Linwood C. Brown, in 2006. She is survived by her four children, William J. Brown, of Greenwood Village, Colo., Susan L. (Brown) Christy and her husband, Daniel L. Christy, of Copper Canyon, Texas, Lyn Mikel Brown and her husband, Mark Tappan, of Waterville, and David W. Brown and his wife, Donna Brown, of Baileyville. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one niece and three nephews.A celebration of Diane's life will be held in August at the Calais United Methodist Church, followed by a graveside service at the Vanceboro Cemetery.
