David Clay Whitaker, 46, husband of Melissa Woodbury Whitaker, died December 6, 2009. Born in Birmingham, Ala., he was the son of the late Charles Alvin Whitaker and Joe Ann Liddell Whitaker. Clay grew up in Florence, S.C., where he was an Eagle Scout. After graduating from West Florence High School, he attended the Citadel. He graduated from Francis Marion College, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Following in his father's footsteps, Clay worked for Crawford & Co. for eighteen years. For the past two years, Clay worked for Capstone ISG as a claims manager for the State of SC. He was a member of the SC Claims Association. Clay was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He enjoyed his "Boys Night Out" softball games, time on the beach, camping trips with his buddies, and his Woody Creek neighbors. But above all, Clay loved being with his family, especially his daughters. Surviving, in addition to his wife and mother, are two daughters, Emily Kathleen and Caroline Carson Whitaker of the home; a sister, Mary Margaret Edwards and husband, Gary, of Burnsville, N.C.; a brother, William Bruce Whitaker and wife, Mary Ellen, of Waxhaw, N.C.; and a mother and father-in-law, Billy and Geneva Woodbury of Georgetown. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 9, 2009, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
