RALEIGH, NC-- David T. O. Williams, 55, of Raleigh, NC, passed unexpectedly on Saturday, January 28, 2006.A native of Spartanburg, SC, Williams attended Wingate College and the University of Georgia. He was one of North Carolinas most recognized and prolific wildlife artists, and a champion of conservation efforts for decades.Mr. Williams began his career at South Carolina Wildlife magazine in 1973. He moved to North Carolina in 1977 to work for Wildlife in North Carolina magazine. Hundreds of his watercolors, acrylics, and pen-and-ink works have been published in Wildlife in North Carolina, for which he was art director during a ten-year tenure at the magazine from 1977-1987.His illustrations for the wildlife column Natures Ways ran from 1981 to the current issue. Dipper the Otter, a nature page Williams illustrated and wrote for the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, was a fixture for a decade.A freelance artist and illustrator since 1992, Williams painted private commission art and illustrated books, magazine articles, and environmental education materials for numerous organizations and agencies. Twenty-four of his illustrations are displayed at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh; 15 are viewed at the N.C. Zoological Park in Asheboro. The Fort Jackson Military Museum in Columbia, SC, holds 16 paintings of South Carolinas Congressional Medal of Honor awardees on permanent display; two paintings are in the Wingate University Museum collection. In addition, numerous private collections host his work across the Southeast. He received the 2002 Governors Award for Conservation Communicator of the Year.Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Mary Ripp Williams; son, Evan McFall Williams; daughter, Jennifer Grace Williams; parents, Arthur Carlyle Art and Dorothy Ouzts Dot Williams of Spartanburg, SC; brother, Arthur Skip Jr. of Spartanburg, SC; sister Dorothy Deede Williams Cohen of Spartanburg, SC; and Alice Williams Smith of Spartanburg, SC.A passionate lover of North Carolinas wild places, Mr. Williams created an unsurpassed body of artistic work infused with his own enthusiastic, charismatic presence. He was an avid paddler, angler, hunter, and observer of the natural world. His artistic efforts to bring together a deep understanding of nature and a reverence for the wild will be missed as much as his wit and laughter and abiding love for family and friends and the state he called home.The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Marys Street.
