David Ames Lee, Esq. November 16, 2009 David Ames Lee, Esq. of Henderson and DeWitt, New York, age 79, passed away Monday, November 16, 2009 surrounded by his immediate family. His immediate family are his beloved wife of 46 years, Brenda Amerman Lee; his son, David (Cindy) Amerman Lee of Clifton Park, NY; his son, Geoffrey Ames Lee of Pompey, NY; his daughter, Elizabeth (Bradley) Anne Lee Stephens of Canterbury, Connecticut. He is also survived by five grandchildren, David Conrad Lee, and Jacob Hunter Lee; sons of David and Cindy Lee; Bradley Charles Stephens, Jr., Abigail Elisse Stephens, Emily Elizabeth Stephens, son and daughters of Elizabeth and Bradley Stephens; his brother, George W. Lee and numerous relatives. He graduated from Yale University in 1952 with a BA degree, and from Cornell University in 1957 with a JD degree. He practiced law with the Hiscock & Barclay law firm and predecessor firms for almost 40 years. In the law firm, he was a member of its management committee and chair of its real estate practice group for many years. When he graduated from Yale, he received a commission in the U.S. Navy (he had been in the NROTC while at Yale) with orders to report to the U.S.S. Tarawa a (CVA 40) aircraft carrier. He served on the U.S.S. Tarawa (CVA 40) during the Korean War as a LTJG being a deck operations officer. He was cleared for Top Secret. While in the Navy, he received the following medals: U.S. Navy Occupation Service Medal with European Clasp, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and a commendation from his captain for commendable performance. At the request of his captain, he wrote a book about the U.S.S. Tarawa (CVA 40) and its recent travels and Japan experiences. The U.S.S. Tarawa (CVA 40) had received the top award for a CVA class carrier in the Atlantic fleet. During his legal career, he served as a trustee and elected attorney of the Syracuse Savings Bank. He served the New York State Bank industry as chair of its Legislative Committee. He served on the Board of Directors of the Monroe Abstract & Title Corporation for many years, finishing his later years as a member of its Executive Committee. He was also on the committee selecting its CEO. While at Yale, he was a senior editor of the "Yale Daily News" and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, a social fraternity. His residential college was Berkeley College. He was a director of Elmcrest Children's Center and had served on its executive committee and president. He also served on the committee to select its CEO. He served as secretary-treasurer and as first vice president of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. David was president of Onondaga Jazz, Inc., an organization that promoted stage concerts in Syracuse for name bands. He is listed in "Whose Who in America", and "Whose Who in American Law". He attained the highest rating in "Martindale Hubbell", a lawyers rating service. In 2006, David was the recipient of the Child at Heart Award given by Elmcrest Children's Center for service to children. As a member of the Onondaga County Bar Association since 1957, he served it as a member of its Board of Directors and a member of the Bank Liaison Committee and was a member of the Lawyers/Broker Committee. He became a member of the New York State Bar Association in 1957. His service to the New York State Bar Association consisted of being a member of the Executive Committee Real Estate Section, Chair Committee on Agent (Title) and Lawyer Ethics. He was also a lecturer for the New York State Bar Association on Real Estate Practice. In his spare time, he sailed and fished (on his beloved Lake Ontario). Over the years, David conducted two separate fishing tournaments from his home at Henderson. These tournaments accounted for many quality fish. He also hunted nearby Tug Hill, read, listened to his music and traveled with his constant companion, his wife, Brenda. David and Brenda spent their winters selectively on Sanibel, Captiva, and Boca Grande Islands off the west coast of Florida. They were accompanied each year for at least a week, by one of their children and that child's family, if such child had children in their family. They purchased their home on Henderson Bay in 1965. David was the author of the book "Gone To Me", a genealogy of his Lee and Ames families. He was a practice consultant for the Real Property Service - New York, published by the Lawyers Co-Operative Publishing Company. He was a member of the Century Club, the Mad River Club, and a former member of the Syra-Canadian Club and the Onondaga Golf and Country Club. The family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday followed by a service at 11:15 a.m. in Rockefeller United Methodist Church, at 350 Nottingham Road, Syracuse, New York. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his remembrance may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 401 N. Salina St., Suite. 304, Syracuse, NY 13203 or to a charity of your choice.
