WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - David Burton Todd, 86, an internationally recognized chemical engineer, passed away Feb. 1, 2012, at his home in West Windsor, N.J.Born in Chester, Pa., Dr. Todd grew up in Freedom, Maine. He received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees in chemical engineering from Northwestern University, and his doctorate from Princeton University. A year of his graduate work was spent as a Fulbright scholar in Delft, Netherlands. He enlisted in the Navy in World War II, served in the North Atlantic and retired from the Naval Reserve as a commander in 1972.Dr. Todd's professional career spanned 60 years, from California to New Jersey; he never successfully retired. He was active in professional organizations, received 22 U.S. patents, and authored more than 100 technical articles and a book, Plastics Compounding: Equipment and Processing. Dr. Todd actively participated in civic affairs. In Michigan, he served on the boards of the Saginaw Symphony, the United Way, and the school board. He served for seven years on the Environmental Commission of Montgomery Township, N.J.Dr. Todd was previously married to Mary Boekhoff Todd, who predeceased him in 2000. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Sweeney Todd; his sister, Mary Todd Pfeifer; his daughter, Rebecca, and son-in-law Charles Klein; three sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Denise Todd, Raymond Todd and Kelley Lehman, and Clifford and Tina Todd; five grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Janet Sweeney McCallum, Kathleen Miano and Ellen Allsteadt; and five stepgrandchildren.A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton, N.J.Memorial contributions may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton, 50 Cherry Hill Road, Princeton Township, NJ 08540, 609-924-1604; or to the Hospice Program of Princeton HomeCare Services, 208 Bunn Drive, Princeton, NJ 08540, 609-497-4900.Arrangements are by Alloway Funeral Homes, 315 East Maple Ave., Merchantville, NJ; 856-663-9085.
