CAMBRIDGE, N.Y.-- Douglas Anderson Carter, 53, of Spring Street, died Friday, June 2, 2006, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy after a courageous battle with cancer.Born June 22, 1953 in Demarest, N.J., he was the son of the late Robert A. and Adelaide Rubsamen Carter. He earned his bachelor’s degree in special education from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.He Married Peggy Ellis Carter on Oct. 1, 1977.After living for a time in Colorado, he move to Berlin, N.Y., to assume the position of Superintendent of Transportation for the Berlin School District. In 1981 he settled his family in Cambridge where he served 20 years as superintendent of transportation for the Cambridge School District.After retiring from the school, he worked at Bennington County United Counseling and then at Samaritan Hospital in Troy as the activities director if the geriactrics psychiatric floor, a job he enjoyed very much.Doug enjoyed listening to music, going to hunting camp, especially “7-11,” boating and fishing. He was a Yankee fan and a devoted Bronco fan from his days in Colorado. He was an active member of the Springfield College Alumni.He is predeceased by a brother, William Carter.Survivors include two beloved daughters, Carrie and her Husband Seth Dopkins of Manchester, Vt., and Ashley Carter of Dorset; a 3-month old granddaughter, Ellery Barbara Dopkins, who he enjoyed so very much; and his former wife, caregiver and special friend, Peggy Carter of Dorset.Friends and relatives are invited to call on Thursday, June 8, 2006, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St. At 7 p.m. there will be a service to remember and celebrate Doug’s life.The family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Albany, NY 12211 or www.cancer.org.
