WINSLOW -- Dorothy Daley Horne passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at her family farm surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 15, 1915, in North Vassalboro, to John and Mabel (Cloutier) Daley. She attended Vassalboro Grammar School and graduated as salutatorian from Winslow High School in 1933. She began work in the secretary pool at Hollingsworth and Whitney and was soon promoted to executive secretary there until she married Carl Hodges Horne on Aug. 23, 1941. She moved into his family farm on the Garland Road in Winslow, where she and Carl ran a successful dairy farm. Always a wonderful cook, Dorothy enjoyed feeding the farm hands and hay crew. She was famous for her homemade root beer. She could pull together a wonderful meal on short notice for family and friends and the farmhouse kitchen was always filled with love and laughter as family gathered for holidays. During this time, she worked from home as a private secretary for the principal of the Oak Grove School in Vassalboro. After her youngest child entered school, she returned to work for the Winslow School Department, first as secretary to the superintendent and then in the library at Winslow Junior High School until she retired. After retiring, she served as a trustee at Winslow Public Library and volunteered as a reader in nursing homes. Dorothy loved to read all types of literary genre and many times would be first on the list for new releases coming to the Winslow Library. A day couldn't go by without her finishing the crossword puzzle in the Morning Sentinel. She loved eating out, especially with her group of bowling friends. Dorothy and Carl had a huge vegetable garden, and she enjoyed canning, freezing and pickling. No one ever left her house without a jar of pickles or some raspberry jam. Dot loved her pets, and later in life always had one of her loving cats sitting next to her when anyone came to visit. Dorothy loved to travel when life on the farm allowed the time. She was very proud of her month-long trip to Africa where she enjoyed many unique and fascinating experiences. Well into her 90s, she was still into new technology, using her laptop to update her social media page and reading new books on her E-reader. Everyone who knew Dorothy agreed that she was a very kind, caring and nonjudgmental person who would always help anyone who needed it. She was predeceased by her husband in 2003. She leaves her daughter, Carla, and husband Charles Burnham, of Bath; her daughter, Diana, and husband Frederick Robie, of Winslow, and her son, Robert, and wife Nancy Horne, of Gorham; her six grandchildren, Matthew, Timothy and Andrew Burnham, Fred and Melissa Robie, and Ben Horne; 10 great-grandchildren; plus many nieces and nephews. Her many special friends continued to support her through her later years.Special thanks to her caregivers Dina, Chris, Amber, Tammy and Angie, the staff at the Lakewood Skilled Unit, Dr. Clifton Smith and his nurse, Claire, Dr. John Koons, and the Health Reach Hospice.
