WEST COLUMBIA - Cynthia Irene Roof Wilkerson died on Saturday, February 25, 2012, after a brief illness. Family, students, friends and any who knew her have lost a caring advocate. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 27, 2012 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel from 5-7 p.m. A service of celebration for her life will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church officiated by the Rev. Paul Aebischer and Rev. Ryan Lyles. Burial will follow in Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church Cemetery.Cindy was born April 8, 1960, the daughter of LaVonne Dennis Roof and the late Jimmy B. Roof. She was a graduate of Airport High School and received both bachelors and masters degrees from the University of South Carolina. She was a National Board Certified physical education teacher at Springdale Elementary School where she touched the lives of many children and adults. Cindy worked tirelessly to enhance the physical activity and health of her students and community. She was currently working on and has begun implementation of a playground project called the Healthy Fitness Zone. Cindy was a Springdale Elementary Teacher of the Year, a recipient of state awards from the South Carolina Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, presented at state and regional conventions, and was published in professional journals. She was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and served on the youth ministry team and numerous other committees.Cindy was the loving and caring wife of Jacob R. Wilkerson for 27 years. Together they loved and raised two beautiful daughters, Anna Irene and Addie Caroline. Their family has a special bond that was evident to all. Cindy was the sunshine and joy in her family. She was outgoing, compassionate, and never met a stranger.Mrs. Wilkerson is survived by her husband, Jacob R. Wilkerson; daughters, Anna Irene Wilkerson and Addie Caroline Wilkerson; mother, LaVonne D. Roof; brother, Michael D. Roof; sister, Karen M. Roof; maternal grandmother, Pearl Dennis; brother-in-law, Avery B. Wilkerson, Jr.; sister-in-law, Kim A. Wilkerson and five nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother-in-law Leila "Griff" Wilkerson and father-in-law, A. B. Wilkerson.Memorials may be made to the Cindy R.
