-> Corona Elizabeth Smith- Harrigan, 76, died just before midnight on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at the residence of her daughter in Winnfield, GA. Ms. Harrigan was born in Jacksonville, FL, on January 14, 1927 to Josephine King Chilsolm and Deacon Freddie Smith. She received her formal education and early Christian training in Brooklyn, NY. On April 9, 1954 she was joined in marriage to the late Victor E. Harrigan, Jr. and to that union were born two children, Joanna Louise and the late Niles. E. Harrigan. In 1969, Corona, her mother and children moved from New York to Savannah, and became active members of the Beth-Eden Baptist Church of East Gordon Street. While in Savannah, Ms. Harrigan worked for the Model Cities Program and attended Armstrong State College studying Business Administration. Her work experience in the Human Services spanned some fifty plus years with fifteen of those years in the administration of Programs for the Aging and Elderly. After the death of her son in 1988, Ms. Harrigan went to work for the Low Country Council of Government as the director of the Area Agency on Aging. She retired from that position in 1993. He accolades of volunteer service are far too numerous to list, among them she served as a spokesperson for both SC and GA AARP chapters, Womens Wellness Coalitions, Best Chance Network, the SC Cobudsman Program, Living Will Witness. In 1994 she was appointed to the Silver Haired Legislature for Jasper County where she lived and was a devoted member of the First Heyward Baptist Church. In the final years of her life she moved to Winnfield and became a member of the Canaan Heights Seventh Day Adventist Church in Thomson, GA. Survivors: daughter, Joanna (Eddie) Paschal; three granddaughters, six great-grand children, four brothers, and a host of relatives and friends. Ms. Harrigan will lie in state in the 110 year ancestral home on Hwy. 462 in Coosawhatchie, SC. Friends are welcome to view the remains on Sunday and Monday , 5:00-7:00 p.m. The Celebration of Life service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, at Second African Baptist Church at the intersection of Hwys. 17 and 462 West.
