A life long resident of Asheville she was a daughter of William and Eleanor Towns Durham. Both parents preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a son, Earl Smith and a grandson, Robert Smith.Mrs. Baten was a 1947 graduate of Stephens-Lee High School and a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Usher Board, the Memorial Club and Welcome Committee.Surviving are her daughters, Catherine Smith of Texas and Reba Boyd of Asheville; sons, James "Sonny" Smith, Larry Carl Smith and James Baten (Turkessa) of Asheville; sisters, Barbara Shelby of Chicago, Ill., Stella Longshore and Elaine Durham of Asheville; brother, Jerome "Boop" Durham of Asheville; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.Services will be held Wednesday at Noon in Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. John H. Grant will officiate, burial will be in Violet Hill Cemetery.The family will receive friends an hour prior to services and other times at the residence.
