Colvin Stevens Carter, age 63, a resident of Lake City for 43 years, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Carter was the daughter of the late Dr. George Stevens and Mrs. Jane Stevens of Leesburg, Florida, and was born in St. Petersburg, Florida. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1964, and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of Florida in 1968. Mrs. Carter taught English and Journalism in the Columbia County School system for 35 years. She was responsible for the publication of the CHS Yearbook and loved to train "her kids" to become creative writers and to seek excellence in all they undertook. She taught second grade at Epiphany Catholic School and enjoy teaching many of her nieces, nephews, and children of close friends. During the past 4 years she was the Reading Coach at CHS, taught courses for reading endorsement, was a trainer for the Florida Reading Initiative, tutored at the Speech and Reading Center and tutored high school students for the FCAT. Colvin voluntarily dedicated herself to mentoring many new, young teachers at Columbia High School and loved and devoted herself to them and the students she served. Mrs. Carter and her husband, Michael, were active members of the White Springs United Methodist Church. She was a fervent participant on the United Methodist Women and they both felt it was their church home. Mrs. Carter is survived by her husband of 41 years, John Michael Carter of Lake City, two daughters, Mrs. Rebecca (Paul) Nowicki and Ms. Sara Carter both of Jacksonville, Florida. She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Diana (Marshall) Douglas, of Lake City, Florida and their two sons, Walter Douglas, Lake City, Florida and Stephen (Jessica) Douglas of Gainesville, Florida. She was devoted to her precious grandchildren , John Michael, Mary Hala, Cecelia Jane, and Elizabeth Camille Nowicki and spent many happy times with them. She is also survived by three cousins, Mr. Jack (Marvel) Goodwin, Midland, TX, Mrs. Wendy (Robby) Roberson, Midland, TX, and Mrs. Jan (Bryan) King, Austin, TX. She was a dear friend to all and had many "sisters" that were so dear to her heart throughout her life: Ms. Shirley McFadden, of Tallahassee, Florida, Mrs. Candace (Wayne) Hines, Lake City, Florida, and Mrs. Joy (Charles) Davis, Keystone Heights, Florida. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 23rd, at 3:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 973 S. Marion St., Lake City, Florida. Interment will be at the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, 264 SW Forest Lawn Way, Lake City, Florida, after the service. Visitation with the family was held at Guerry Funeral Home, Thursday, October 22nd, 2659 SW Main Blvd., Lake City, FL., from 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Florida United Methodist Children's Home, 51 Main St., Enterprise, FL 32725 or on the internet at www.fumch.org.
