AUGUSTA, Ga. - Col. Robert A. Prince, USAF (Retired), 88, a two-time recipient of the Legion of Merit, died on March 24, 2009, at his residence. Graveside memorial services with full military honors will be held on April 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Westover Memorial Park with Rev. Heyward Knight and Rev. Sam Prince officiating. Col. Prince served with distinction in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in Japan after the war. He returned home and attended law school at the University of Georgia, graduating in 1948 after completing the requirements of three years in just two years. Col. Prince subsequently returned to service with the United States Air Force and rose to become the Chief of Litigation for Headquarters, USAF. The normal tour of duty for this position was four years, but because of Col. Prince's invaluable assistance to the Department of Justice, he had his tour extended an additional two years upon the direct requests to the Secretary of Defense from two U. S. Attorney Generals. Col. Prince was formally commended upon completion of each of his tours of duty during his 21 years in the Air Force, including being awarded the Legion of Merit on two different occasions. The Legion of Merit is the highest non-combat decoration awarded by the Air Force. Col. Prince retired from the Air Force in 1970 and then served as Chief of Litigation for the General Services Administration (GSA) in Washington, DC. During this time he was promoted to the grade of GS-16 and received frequent formal commendations for his achievements in this position. He also received an "Administrator's Exceptional Service Award" in 1975 for his distinguished contributions and outstanding efforts in litigation matters. The exemplary performance of Col. Prince during his tours of duty with the Air Force and GSA resulted in the savings of millions of dollars to the U. S. government and also resulted in swift and equitable treatment to the government and government contractors alike. Col. Prince engaged in the private practice of law in Augusta after his retirement from the Air Force. Col. Prince was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Nell Ray Prince. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Prince (Henry) Williams, St. Marys, Georgia; four sons, Robert (Amber) Prince, Armuchee, Georgia; Rev. Sam (Joyce) Prince, Mt. Airy, North Carolina; Chris (Maria) Prince, Memphis, Tennessee; and Judge John (Shaunna) Prince, Fort Mitchell, Kentucky; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Molly P. Gamble; one brother, Edwin Prince; adopted daughter Ethel Morris; special friend and caretaker Lisa Adams; and many loving cousins.
