Clarence C. Age 69, died suddenly Sunday, June 26. Born in Waverly on August 13, 1935, he was son of the late Clarence Van Horn and Florence (Sally) Van Horn Crossett, and stepson of Rowland (Mike) Crossett. Mr. Van Horn served as Justice of the Town of Barton for the last 18 years. He was employed by the New York State Department of Corrections as Educational Supervisor at the Elmira Correctional Facility. Mr. Van Horn graduated from Waverly High School, Ithaca College, and received Master's Degrees from Ithaca College and Columbia University. He held teaching positions in Savona and Beacon, New York, was principal of Athens Main Elementary School, and Director of Recreation, Waverly. He was an outstanding athlete and gifted coach. Mr. Van Horn was a member of and presided over many Masonic bodies including Waverly Lodge #407, Union Lodge #108 of Towanda, Cayuta Chapter #245, Elmira Chapter #42, Northern Council #24 of Athens, Ahwagu #30 Council of Owego, Northern Commandery #16 of Towanda, and Towanda Lodge of Perfection. At the time of his death, he was President of the Board of Directors of the Grand Charity Corporation of the Grand Council. He was Charter Preeminent Governor of Northeastern York Rite College #102 of Towanda, a member of A.A.S.R.- Valley of Williamsport and Valley of Towanda, and a DeMolay Dad. Mr. Van Horn received the Meritorious Service Award of the Valley of Towanda and was awarded the Order of Purple Cross. In 1992 Mr. Van Horn was Most Puissant Past Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Master Masons of Pennsylvania. He will receive the 33rd Degree posthumously this August in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A lifelong member of North Waverly Chapel, Mr. Van Horn was a past Trustee. He was Past President of the Waverly Rotary Club, Past President of the Tioga County Court Clerks Magistrate Association, Past President of the Interstate Teachers Bowling Association, President of the Board of Directors of the Grand Charity Corporation of the Grand Council, a member of the New York State Magistrates Association, a life member of Cayuta Hose, a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, a member of the North Barton Grange, a driving instructor of the AARP, a fund raiser for the Special Olympics, and he coached and umpired community baseball, football, and basketball in youth leagues for many years. Mr. Van Horn is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kay (Saunders); and his six children and their families: Michael Van Horn of Phoenix, AZ; C. Mark Van Horn and Dr. Jean Sibonga and their children, Christopher and Casey of League City, TX; Mitchell and Linda Van Horn and their daughter, Maisy of Chandler, AZ; Melissa and David Lougher and their children, Jessica and Robby Williams, and Eric of Waverly; Matthew Van Horn of Waverly; and Marcy and Alan Burgess and their children, Jacob, Kayley, Amanda, and Kelsey of Waverly. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Margaret Saunders of Waverly; sister- and brother-in-law, Barbara and Edwin Lynch and their daughter, Bethany of Newton, MA; and many cousins. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of Clarence's life on Wednesday, June 29th, at 2 p.m. at the North Waverly Chapel. Masonic services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be at a later date in the Forrest Home Cemetery, Waverly. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Van Horn's name to the charity of one's choice. Caring assistance is being provided by The Cooley Family of the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols.
