UPTON— Clara (Van Brug) Emond, 80, passed away at University of Massachusetts Medical Center on Monday, December 5th, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on February 14, 1925 in Whitinsville, Ma. She was the daughter of Cornelius and Sadie (Westerdyk) Van Brug. She attended Northbridge High School, but left prior to graduation to support her family during WWII. She was a machine operator in several factories, retiring in 1988 from Fenwal Corporation in Ashland. She received many awards for her contributions to safety and production improvements in the work place. Clara was the 1998 recipient of the Meals on Wheels Volunteer of the Year Award, for her dedication to the Tri Valley Elder Service Nutrition Program. She also received the Apple Award 5 times for her contributions to feeding the elderly. Besides her volunteer efforts, she was an avid bowler. She loved all kinds of sports, especially the Patriots. She relished her role as grandmother to her 5 grandchildren. Most recently, despite her illness, she was the instructor for the Upton Senior Center "Bone Builders Bingo" exercise group. She was a life long resident of Northbridge, moving to Upton 17 years ago. She was a member of Faith Fellowship Church in Uxbridge and the Young at Heart Senior Group. She is survived by her 4 children, Ellen Clay, of Framingham, Arthur and Van Emond, of Northbridge, and Julia Emond-Parkin, of Worcester. She also leaves her daughter-in-law, Tracey Emond-Parkin, and her 2 sisters, Ruth Boudreau, of Northbridge, and Sadie Gonynor, of Michigan. She is predeceased by her brother Harry Van Brug. In death, as in life, Clara continues to give to others with the donation of her remains to the University of Massachusetts Medical School. A memorial service will be held at Faith Fellowship Church in Uxbridge, Ma. On Saturday December 10th at 11:00 am. Donations may be made in Clara's memory to the St Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929.
