Clara Phillips Riley, 87, formerly of 209 Hwy. 20, widow of James Carlisle Riley, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Riverside Nursing Center.Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late Robert L. and Nolia Bryson Phillips. She was a retired postmaster from the Piedmont postal service following thirty-five years of service. Mrs. Riley was a member of Piedmont First Baptist Church, where she served as church historian, president of the Baptist Women, was a member of Group 4 and of the TEL Sunday School Class.Surviving are a son, Robert G. Riley, of Six Mile; and a sister, Robbie Phillips Bishop, of Piedmont.Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer, by Drs. Thomas DeVenny and Stephen Hearne. Burial will follow in Greenville Memorial Gardens.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Piedmont First Baptist Church, 8 First Baptist Church Road, Piedmont, SC 29673.The family members are at their respective homes and will receive friends 2 to 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
