PERRY _ Claire Joan Lippman, born in New York City, on April 13, 1920, died peacefully in Vancouver on September 7, 2006, after a courageous struggle with cancer. Claire was predeceased by her beloved husband, Tom Sr. She will be greatly missed and her memory cherished by her children Sue (Gordy), Tom (Beth), John (Elaine), and Kitty (Dave). She was a treasured grandmother to Greg, Carrie (Jeff), Dustin, Mark, Alison, Michael, Daniel, Nicholas, Liam, and great-grandmother to Jacob, Jaiden, and Megan. She will also be deeply missed by her nieces, nephews, and cousin as well as many dear friends. Claire touched the lives of everyone she met with her combination of warmth, interest, curiosity and true empathy. No one was above or beneath her notice. She was a great humanist, internationalist, and peace advocate. She was a magnificent mother with boundless reserves of love, patience and approval for her children and their families. Tom Sr. was the love of her life. They were supportive and endlessly devoted to each other in all of their separate and mutual passions. They shared the same great optimism and faith in the basic goodness of human nature. The family is deeply grateful for the wonderful care provided by her long time physicians Dr. Nicola James and Dr. James M. Wright, the fine and compassionate home care nurses from Pacific Spirit Health Unit, the gentle medical and nursing staff of St. Paul's Hospital's Palliative Care Unit, and the loving caregivers who attended her around the clock at her home this summer. Her last year was greatly enriched by her many old friends and the new friends and wonderful community she discovered at the O'Keefe Centre. We thank all of you. By Claire's wish, no memorial service will be held. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in honour of Claire's life may be made to the Stephen Lewis Foundation's "Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign". This fund supports African grandmothers who are struggling to secure a hopeful and healthy future for generations of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Donations can be sent directly to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, 260 Spadina Avenue, Suite 501, Toronto, Ontario, M5T 2E4, (416) 533-9292, www.stephenlewisfoundation.org .
