TROY Christine Smith, 90, formerly of Winter Street Extension, died Saturday evening, August 14, 2004 at The Heritage House in Troy. She was the wife of the late William S. Smith. Born in Watervliet, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Anna Powanda Spiak. She worked in many of the garment factories in Troy as a seamstress for many years before being employed by the Education Department of New York State, from where she retired. She was known for being an avid walker all of her life. She doted on her seven great-grandchildren and was a wonderful Nina. She is survived by two sons, William J. Smith, Sr. and his wife, Joan of Troy and Richard J. Smith and his wife, Katharine of Gahanna, Ohio; six grandchildren, Janet Reed of Mechanicville, William J. Smith, Jr. of Rotterdam, Kristen Smith of Clifton Park, Debra Styles of Troy, Sara Smith and Matthew Smith, both of Gahanna, Ohio; also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Emma Thomas, Benjamin and Jarrod Reed, Bradley and Dylan Smith, Alyssa and Anthony Styles; two sisters, Sophie Mazzrillo of Hollywood, Fla, Eva Kokernak of Watervliet; a brother, John Spiak (Barbara) of Center Brunswick; also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Alice Burke; her brothers, Michael and Andy Spiak. The funeral for Christine will be held Wednesday morning at 8:45 from th Wm. Leahy Funeral Home, 336 Third Street and from Sacred Heart Church in Troy at 9:30, where a Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy. Contributions, in Christine's memory, to either the Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer or the American Cancer Society, would be appreciated.
