CARPENTER, Christine Mary (Nancarrow) January 6th, 1926 November 16th, 2008 Artist, Mother, Quaker, Poet Born at Leytonstone, England. Died at Victoria, B.C., Canada, peacefully while she slept. Chris's gift as an artist showed as a young girl and after completing grade school she studied at The London School of Art during WWII. Here she met her first husband (W.D.Turner), an Australian Air-force member. They spent a year in London then shipped to Australia where their three sons and daughter were born. During the early years in Australia they both painted with a group of artists who all went on to achieve high esteem in the Australian art community. Chris re-married in 1964 then immigrated to British Columbia with her new husband (P. Nancarrow) and three youngest children. After two years in Lillooet they moved to Nelson, British Columbia. She explored various art media while raising her family, then returned to art school at The Kootenay School of Art in the early seventies to further delve into her art passion. Chris then moved to Victoria, B.C. where she was a textile conservator at the provincial museum and lived on her houseboat in Esquimalt harbor. Leaving the security of this job, Chris's next adventure had her moving to remote Alert Bay, northern Vancouver Island and living in an ocean-side cabin. During the years in Alert Bay and neighboring Sointula she became known as `The painter' and a large collection of spectacular water colour and ink works are permanently housed in the Alert Bay Visitor's Centre. Chris was, perhaps, her happiest during these years! Chris then moved to Cumberland and Courtenay before returning to Victoria, her good real estate sense allowing her to profit with each move. She was happily living in her new apartment, close to her son Tom, when she suffered a severe stroke early in 2004. She was hospitalized and spent her final time in Mt. Tolmie extended care hospital only blocks from Tom's home. She was content there and the devoted staff provided wonderful care. Special mention of Tetley Teabag, the black and white cat, who visits at Mt. Tolmie regularly. Survived by eldest son David Turner(Lolita) of Perth, Western Australia, Tom Turner of Victoria, Ben Turner of Edmonton, and Carmen Francesca Turner of Vancouver. Predeceased by her only sister Janet, and her parents Frank and Elsie Carpenter, she is also survived by twelve grand-children and eight great grand-children and counting. Chris was a devoted Quaker and a memorial service will be held in the Society of Friends' meeting hall, 1829 Fern St., Victoria at 2PM on Saturday December 6th, 2008. Donations may be made to Amnesty International or any peace organization. 514009 Published in the Victoria Times-Colonist on 11/22/2008
