Charles Edwin Winn, 97, formerly of Toy Street, died Saturday, September 30, 2006, at Foothills Presbyterian Home, Easley.Born in Meriweather, Ga., June 21, 1909, on his father's birthday, he was the eldest son of the late Charles Shannon Winn and Lillian Myrick Winn. He was a former resident of Charleston, and moved to Greenville in July 1962.Mr. Winn was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Army on July 31, 1961, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, after more than thirty years of military service, including ten years in the U.S. Army Reserves.He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he joined in 1962, and the Men's Bible Class. While in Charleston, he was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon and elder.He was a charter member of the Retired Officers Association, a member of the American Legion, Post 3, and a member of the Boy Scouts Alumni Family. He was a Mason, and a former member of the Kiwanis Club. He was a charter member of the "Town Squares" and a charter member of the "Elderberries." Surviving are his wife, Helen Hendershot Winn; two daughters, Beverly W. Edgin of Sewanee, Tenn., and Sandra W. Burnett of Charleston, S.C.; two sons, Dr. Charles E. Winn II of Asheville, N.C., and Robert K. Winn of Greenville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Pricilla Bishop Winn; and a granddaughter, Susan Kathleen Edgin. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2006, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Tim Leslie and Dr. Randolph Kowalski officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be held in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the church parlor.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Interim Hospice or Foothills Presbyterian Home.The Mackey Mortuary, www.mackeymortuary.com.
