PACE, Fla. Charles Thomas Pyles, II, known to those who loved him as "Tom" passed on to be with his heavenly Father on Monday, October 31, 2005. He was living in Pace, Florida and recently celebrated his 85th birthday with his family at home. Tom was born on September 8th, 1920 in Hancock, Maryland to parents, Dr. Charles Thomas Pyles and Mary Elizabeth Griffith.Attracted to aviation at a young age, Tom went on to become a graduate of Parks Air College in St. Louis, Missouri and continued studying the subject in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He worked for Hunt Oil Company in Tuscaloosa as the Superintendent of Maintenance for 37 years. He retired from there in 1985. Tom was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.Tom was married to Gladys Leon Reynolds in 1943 and had daughter Susan Nell Pyles and Charles Thomas Pyles, III. After 30 years together, wife Sue passed away and Tom remarried Estelle Swindle and lived happily together for 10 years until she passed in Feb. 1984. Later Tom was married to Minnie Love and she became a loved grandmother to Tom's three grandchildren (Paula, Stephanie, and Susan) as he became a cherished grandfather to her four (Francis, Edward, Andrea, and Carolyn) grandchildren. Two families became one family when Tom and Minnie married. Minnie and Tom were married for 20 years and were a beautiful example of love to all that knew them. Their patient and kind love was sweetly admired. After living in Tuscaloosa, Alabama together for 12 years where their joined families shared many special Thanksgiving Holidays that are fondly remembered, Minnie and Tom moved to Pace, Florida where they spent the next eight years near her family, children Edward and Sylvia Love and their son, Edward Love, II and the late Andrea Love. They were a wonderful family to Tom and Minnie and loved and cared for Tom as their own father and grandfather. Minnie passed away in September 2004 in Pace, Florida.Tom was a man of peace and that could be seen in the way that he chose to spend his time. He loved nature and spent much of his time while in Alabama at a place in Samantha where he owner a large piece of land. He, with the help of his son-in-law, Eugene Simpson, built a cabin near a small lake on this land and visited there frequently to fish and enjoy life and family. This place became a treasured piece of life for his children and grandchildren and it is still enjoyed by all of them today. They remember him and his passion for this place when they are there. His spirit will always be felt there. Tom was on a bowling league and enjoyed bowling with his family even just a few weeks before he passed away. He and Minnie loved to watch birds together from their home in Florida and enjoyed taking care of and loving his cat. He was a man of honesty and love.Tom is survived by his daughter, Susan, and her husband, Eugene Simpson, of Tuscaloosa, and his son, Charles Thomas Pyles, III and Karen Pyles of Tuscaloosa, and his four grandchildren, Paula Ross, Stephanie Chamberlain, Susan Pyles, Edward Love, and great-granddaughter, Haylee Ross.Predeceased family members include his parents mentioned above and brother, William Pyles and sister Mary Dade Yeatman and the late granddaughter Andrea Love.Tom spent his entire life surrounded by people who admire his character and spirit and were inspired by being in his company. He was a testimony to all of the fruits of the spirit, and his honest heart, gentle smile and subtle humor will be missed and remembered affectionately. He was loved and appreciated every day of his life and always gave more than he received. His children and grandchildren cherish the time shared with him and see his legacy in each of them.Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Charles Durham officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.Pallbearers will be Eugene Simpson, Jack Ross, Charlie Chamberlain, Edward Love, Richard Clements and Johnny Scott.Honorary pallbearers are employees of Hunt Oil Company, Visiting Angels of Northwest Florida, and members of 1st Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa."Let not your heart be troubled: you believe in God, believe also in Me.
