WILMINGTON -- Charles “Chuck” A. Johnson, 73, a resident of West Dover, died at home on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007, surrounded by his beloved family, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Johnson was born in Holton, Maine, on July 25, 1934, the son of Arvid Oscar Johnson and Myrtle McDonald. The family moved to Readsboro in 1940, where Charles attended schools graduating from Readsboro Central High School.He married Sandra Bartlett of West Dover on June 14, 1958, while serving in the Army. Mr. Johnson was honorably discharged from the Army in 1959.After serving in the Army, he was employed by Haystack Ski Area, Coombs Maple Products and Mount Snow, where he held several positions, including base lodge manager. He retired from Snow Lake Lodge as maintenance supervisor. Mr. Johnson served the town of Dover as police chief and as a volunteer fireman. From 1967 until his retirement in 2007, he held the position of first constable and tax collector. He served many years as a deputy for the Windham County Sheriff's Department.He was the coach of the Dover A and B Little League teams for 19 years. He was more than an avid Yankee fan along with his son Tony, enjoying many years of friendly banter with the Red Sox fans of Deerfield Valley. He was a Boy Scout and served as a Boy Scout leader. As a Boy Scout, he was featured in a painting titled “The Adventure Trail” by Norman Rockwell for the 1952 Boy Scout calendar. Mr. Johnson's main source of enjoyment in his life came from times spent with his family including attending his grandchildren's sporting events.He was predeceased by his parents, a son Anthony (Tony), brothers Merle, Ronald, William and Roland (Butch), a niece Vickey Marchegiani and a nephew Mark Johnson.In addition to his wife of 49 years, he is survived by his son Randall and his wife Robin, and their children Dylan, Teya and Robert of West Dover; son Bradley and his wife Elizabeth and their children Emily, Daniel and Caroline of Clifton Park, N.Y.; a daughter, Monica Crawford and her husband Jason and their children Sierra, Kylie-blu, and Bryer-lyn and great-granddaughter Lyllian of Wilmington.Funeral services for Mr. Johnson will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at West Dover Congregational Church, with the Rev. Marcia Dorey officiating. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the COVEY AND ALLEN FUNERAL HOME in Wilmington. Interment will take place following the funeral at the Johnson family lot in Sadawga Cemetery in Whitingham.In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Johnson's memory should be made to the Vermont Kidney Association in care of Covey and Allen Funeral Home, P.O.
