Brassard, Charles H. CLAVERACK Charles "Chuck" H. Brassard, age 80, of Claverack, died on Friday, October 24, 2014 in the care of Calvary Hospice at the Mary Manning Walsh Home in Manhattan. He was born on September 20, 1934 in Spokane, Wash., the son of the late Harvey Brassard and Ellen Hopper. Chuck was a graduate of UCLA and the Thunderbird School of International Management. After serving in the United States Navy in Okinawa, Japan, he began a long and successful career in international business management. He met his late wife, Liliane (Duvivier) Brassard, early in his career while working for Firestone in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Over the course of his career Chuck had the opportunity to live, work, and travel extensively throughout Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He was truly a citizen of the world, and felt strongly that all people should seek to understand the cultures of others. Chuck first discovered the beauty of Claverack while visiting longtime friend and Columbia County resident, Bruno Pasquier Desvignes, in the early 1980s. He fell in love with the area and dreamed of one day living near one of its many creeks and waterfalls. His dream came true a few years later. In time, Chuck became increasingly involved in the local community and was particularly active in developing the master plan for the town of Claverack and in seeking to preserve historic structures and natural spaces in the county. He is survived by his children, Charlie Brassard and wife Jessica, and Michele Widd; his sister, Suzanne McKenney; his grandchildren, Ryan Widd and Lily Brassard, and many nieces and nephews. Chuck's ashes will be scattered, along with those of his late wife, Liliane, in Buttermilk Falls his home and his refuge following a private gathering of friends and family. Condolences may be mailed to Michele Widd, 1152 Belfair Way, Chapel Hill, NC 27517. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Claverack Free Library New Building Fund in memory of Chuck Brassard, Claverack Library, 629 Rt 23B, P.O.
