Avis de décès de Charles-Erskine Rice


Watkinsville, GA - Dr. Charles Erskine Rice, 86 of Carol Drive, Watkinsville, died Tuesday morning at Athens Regional Hospital. A native of Moultrie Ga. He had resided in Oconee County since 1965. He was the son of Benjamin Spencer Rice and Emma Jean Cooper Rice. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Eugene Rice, Spencer Rice, Bob Rice, John Rice, and his wife, Pauline B. Rice. Survivors include his sons Thomas M. and Anna Rice, James Spencer and Deborah Rice and four grandchildren, Lindsay J. Rice, Morgan E. Rice, Charles S. Rice and Aberleigh Rice.Charles Rice attended the University of Georgia where he received his degree in Agricultural Engineering; He received his Masters from Iowa State University, and his Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering from Michigan State University. He was a professor of Engineering at Georgia until he retired in 1982.Charles Rice retired from the Army Reserves in 1967 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was in active service from Jan. 29 1942 until the end of WW II. While in combat in the European Theatre he received the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. He was an Officer in the 38th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron during the war.Charles Rice was very active in the Oconee County community promoting Boy Scouts, 4-H, the Oconee Chamber of Commerce, and one of his last projects was to help start a Volunteer Fire Dept. in the Barber Creek Community where he lived.The family will receive friends at the Lord and Stephens Funeral Home West, in Athens Wednesday evening from 6 until 8. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 8, 11:00 AM at Lord and Stephens West.In lieu of flowers the family ask that memorials be made to the Charles and Pauline Rice Memorial 4-H Scholarship Fund in Oconee County.Please sign our Obituary Guest Book at www.onlineathens.com.Athens Banner-Herald, Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004
