GUNTER Charles D. Gunter, Sr., died Sunday, February 8, 2004. Born in Greenville, FL on May 2, 1918, Mr. Gunter lived in Jacksonville for most of his life. Charles served in the Civil Air Patrol. He was a self employed general contractor from the age of 21 until his retirement. A devoted family man, Mr. Gunter served the North Florida Boy Scout Council for 15 years and was district finance chairman while his sons went through the ranks and earned their Eagle Scout awards. Mr. Gunter was a member of Riverside Masonic Lodge No. 266 and both the York Rite and Scottish Rite, the Red Cross of Constantine, Cabiri and a life member of Morocco Temple where he served as President of the Hospitality Committee, Treasurer of the Pilgrimage Committee and Potentate in 1978. He was a former Jaycee and Kiwanian and belonged to San Jose Country Club, Ye Mystic Revelers, the Hibernian Social and Marching Club. He belonged to San Jose Episcopal Church where he had served on the vestry and was a past Ju nior Warden. Mr. Gunter is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth Shimp Gunter and their five children, Charles D. Gunter, Jr. (Myrl), Howard L. Gunter (Edna), Sharon G. Farshing (Don), Meg G. Kesceti (Frank), and Cathy G. Joseph (Raymond). Predeceased by a grandson, Lee Gunter, he is survived by 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 11th, at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Avenue. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, February 12th, at San Jose Episcopal Church with The Right Reverend Frank Cerveny and The Reverend David Barr officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be the Messrs. C.R. Gunter, Jason Miller, Richard Williams, Justin Joseph, Troy Clark, and Scott Foltz, and Honorary Pallbearers are Messrs. Roland Kennedy, Grady Steele, and Lou Frost. The family wishes to express deep gratitude to Hospice for the excellent and compassionate care given. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in his memory to Hospice of Northeast Florida, the Alzheimer's Association, or a charity of your choice.
