Charles Walker Carroll died April 1, 2009 in Landrum, South Carolina surrounded by his family and close friends. He was born December 25, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio to William and Evelyn Carroll. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William and Harold. Charles will be deeply missed by Mary Jean Carroll and his seven children -- Barbara (Peter) LaRose, Elizabeth Walton and Len Stauffenger, Thomas (Sandra) Carroll, Patricia (Stephen) Jun, Teresa (Walter) McGee, Andrew (Robin) Carroll and Ann (Kevin) Mizer. Charles leaves behind 15 grandchildren, Catherine (Sam) Crea, Ann (Brooks) Humphreys, Peter LaRose, Craig and Brandon Walton, Joseph and Frances Carroll, Sarah Gaynor, Ryan Jun, Henry, Grace and Matthew McGee, Kelly Caldwell, Walker Carroll, Caroline Mizer and great-grandchild, Rocco Dominic Humphreys. Charles grew up in Chardon, Ohio before his family moved to Painesville, Ohio where he graduated from Harvey High School in 1944. He then entered the U. S. Army where he served honorably from 1945 to 1947. Charles is a graduate of the Ohio State University class of 1950. After graduating he moved to Akron with his wife Mary Jean (Brown) to raise his family and begin a long and successful career in the rubber industry. After working for Union Carbide and Goodrich Rubber Company he started Burton Rubber Processing located in Burton, Ohio. Under his direction, Burton Rubber grew to have four locations in several states. His business philosophy was to always provide a superior quality product and he followed the motto: "The customer is always first." Charles retired to South Carolina in 1988 and pursued his lifelong passion for genealogy and history. His research and documentation of both the Carroll and Brown families is a blessing for his children and grandchildren. Charles' other passions included tree farming and real estate development. The Carroll family deeply thanks Rickey Gosnell, Amy Keim, Renetta Horton-Greene, Beth Wolfe, Bobbie Brown, and Ed and Helen Mileski for their love and assistance during their father's retirement and caring for him as his health declined. All of you are forever in our prayers. A family service was held April 6, 2009 at Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home in Fairlawn, Ohio with Fr. Michael Marco, S.J. presiding. A private burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery. In honor of Charles W. Carroll's charitable nature, the family requests that friends make donations in his name to the charity of their choice.
