Catherine Ellen Johnson, 96 WINDHAM -- Catherine Ellen Johnson born on June 28, 1915, the daughter of the Rev. James and Grace Weeks Pratt, died on June 19, 2012, at the age of 96. A lifelong Windham resident, Catherine graduated from Windham High School, where she played basketball for the school team, an accomplishment of which she was very proud. As a young girl she worked at the Crocket House in Casco, while also working with her four sisters at their family's Inland Farm. Catherine married her childhood sweetheart, Merton R. Johnson on Sept. 11, 1935. Merton and Catherine raised their family, sons Walter and John, while living in homes on the Windham Correctional Center grounds, where Merton was superintendent, and at their camp on Highland Lake. Catherine worked for 25 years at the S.D. Warren Mill in Westbrook, retiring in 1973. After retirement, Merton and Catherine spent winters in Lake Wales and Lakeland, Fla., for 25 years, while maintaining their permanent home on the Highland Cliff Road. Catherine was a lifelong member of the Highland Cliff Advent Christian Church in Windham and she and Merton were very active in the Advent Christian Mechanic Falls Campground activities. She was predeceased by her husband Merton in 2011; an infant son Warren in 1938 and Warren's twin brother Walter in 2007. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Gladys Hill and Mary Churchill. She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Fletcher and Grace Burns, both of Windham; son John and his wife Joan Lunt Johnson; daughter-in-law, Sylvia Johnson; and three granddaughters, Jeanne Swartz and her husband Steve of Haverhill, Mass., Sandra Avery of Scarborough, and Cynthia Chamberlain and her husband Steven of Scarborough. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Amanda and Kevin Chamberlain of Scarborough, Stacy and Christy Swartz of Haverhill, Mass., and Sarah Avery of Scarborough. The family would like to express appreciation to Ledgeview Assisted Living in Cumberland as well as VNA Home Hospice for the wonderful care which they have provided for Catherine. There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham.
