PORTSMOUTH ; C. Claire Moore, known to her friends as "C.C.," longtime resident of Portsmouth, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2008, at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton. Born on July 24, 1923, to the late Guy E. and Catherine Mary "Dot" Doherty Hazeltine of Chelmsford, Mass., she grew up in Chelmsford with her loving parents and two siblings, Ethna and Charles. After graduating from Chelmsford High School, she worked for a time for Singer Sewing Company, learning to sew, among other things, parachutes for the troops in World War II. Continuing a tradition of service to her country, she joined the Marine Corps in 1944, serving as a photographer at Cherry Point, N.C. After the war, she married Thomas J. Moore Jr. of Bradford, where she raised three sons. In addition to raising a family, she worked as a life insurance agent after her husband's retirement from that profession, worked with the Portsmouth Police Department for eight years and as a Mary Kay consultant for 10 years. She was a gifted painter and photographer, and spent many happy years sailing as a life member of the Portsmouth Yacht Club. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Moore Jr., and her son, Thomas J. Moore III. Survivors include her brother, Charles Hazeltine of Port Richey, Fla.; her son, Michael J. Moore and daughter-in-law, Kate Moore, of Atlanta, Ga.; her son, Kevin P. Moore; six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A ceremony honoring her life will be held on her birthday in 2009. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Hampshire Veterans Home, 139 Winter St., Tilton, NH 03276, in her name.
