July 12, 2003 Carolyne Kahle Davis, a resident of Stockton, NJ, died on Saturday, July 12 at her home, from complications related to multiple system disorder. She was 71. Born in Penn Yan, NY on January 31, 1932, Dr. Davis was raised in Sigel, PA and Cazenovia, NY.After graduating from Cazenovia Central High School in 1949, she attended Dickinson College and then John Hopkins University, graduating in 1954 with a BS in nursing. After working as a nurse for several years, she received both a masters degree in nursing in 1964 and a PH.D in higher education administration in 1972 from Syracuse University. While at Syracuse, from 1969 until 1973, she served as chairman of the baccalaureate nursing program. In 1973 she became Dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan and then in 1975 became Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs. Throughout her years at Michigan, Dr. Davis also served as a professor of nursing and education. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan asked Dr. Davis to serve as Administrator of the Department of Health and Human Services' Health Care Financing Administration. In this position, she managed the Medicare and Medicaid programs. In 1985, Dr. Davis left HCFA and became a national and international health care advisor for Ernst and Young. In the late 1980s and 1990s she served on numerous boards including those of Prudential Insurance, Merck Pharmaceuticals, Beckman Instruments, Beverly Enterprises, Science Applications International Corporation and Pharmaceutical Marketing Services, Inc. She also served as a trustee for John Hopkins University and Georgetown University and was on the board of directors of the American Association for Higher Education and the Prudential Foundation. She was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from John Hopkins University in 1981 and, in 1982, was awarded honorary doctorates from Georgetown University and the University of Evansville. Dr. Davis is survived by her husband Ott Davis of Stockton, NJ; her son and daughter-in-law Chip and Wendy Davis; her grandchildren Kylie, Dana and Will, all of Baltimore, MD; her sister Helen Simonelli of Camillus, NY and her brother Richard Cargill of Cazenovia, NY. Funeral services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Dr. Carolyne K. Davis Fund for International Nursing, University of Michigan School of Nursing, 400 N.
