Carolyn J. Cooley Barneveld, NY Carolyn Jean Cooley, 54, passed away April 11, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Richard Ferris; her daughters, Hannah and Julie Ferris, at home; her parents, Dr. William S. and Joan C. Cooley, Remsen, NY; and stepchildren, Roscoe Ferris, Burlington, VT, Charles Ferris, Bolton Valley, VT, Andrew Ferris, Troy, NY, Emily Ferris Hawkridge, Remsen, NY, and Kate Ferris, Boston, MA. Carolyn is also survived by three sisters, Laurel Cooley, Shawnee, PA, Dawn Cooley Stevens, Avon, CT, and Candace Cooley, Fort Walton, FL; two brothers, William Cooley, Oneida, NY, and Daniel Cooley, Haverhill, MA; as well as numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Carolyn graduated from Remsen Central School in 1975 as Class Valedictorian, graduated from Colgate University in 1978, and received her Juris Doctor Degree from Boston University in 1981. She practiced Law in Central NY for almost 30 years and was highly regarded by the legal profession, especially the Bankruptcy Bar. Carolyn served on the Board of Directors for Legal Aid Society for 20 years and as president of the board for almost half of that time. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Foothills Girl Scout Council for many years. Carolyn was a member of the New York State Bar, the Federal Bar for the Northern District of NY, the Oneida County Bar Association, and the Central New York Bankruptcy Bar Association. Carolyn took special joy in coaching her daughters' soccer teams and was instrumental in making Holland Patent Girls Soccer competitive in the Tri-Valley League. Carolyn's great love was travel. Over the years, she traveled to many special places, including Rome, Italy, Paris, France, Spain, California, and the Grand Canyon. The family wants to especially thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare and St. Luke's Home. Thanks also to Prospect Ambulance, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital and SUNY Upstate Medical Center. The family will receive relatives and friends Thursday and Friday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, Forty Main Street, Whitesboro. Carolyn's Memorial Service will be held Saturday, 3:00 p.m., at Holland Patent Presbyterian Church, 7835 Park Ave., Holland Patent. A reception will follow the service at Unity Hall, 101 Vanderkemp Ave., Barneveld. Please consider memorials to Holland Patent Presbyterian Church or Prospect Ambulance.
