SMITH, Carol Diane (nee Hubble)July 13, 1946 - September 20, 2012It is with incredible sadness that we announce the passing of Carol Diane Smith, loving wife for 44 wonderful years of Glenn Smith and adored mother of Jason and Gavin Smith. After a 16 year long courageous battle against the devastating effects of cancer, she quietly but bravely succumbed to this terrible disease on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Sarcee Hospice. Carol was born in Peterborough, Ontario, only daughter of Elgin and Verna Hubble and younger sister of her brother Roger. She attended elementary and high school in Peterborough where she met her future husband Glenn on a school bus. They married in 1968 and lived the first ten years of marriage in Cambridge, Ontario where Jason was born in 1973. In 1976 the family moved to Calgary, where Gavin was born in 1978. Carol stayed home as a full-time mother while her sons were young and then returned to the workforce in Calgary as a secretary at Eatons and later at Harding Carpets. When Glenn's job required him to relocate to Lloydminster for an assignment in excess of one year, the entire family moved as well, resulting in a great life experience. Camping on vacation and weekends as a family created many wonderful experiences and fond memories. Later they purchased a cottage at Hidden Valley that provided them with many days of enjoyment. Carol was a wonderful cook who enjoyed preparing many dinner parties for friends. She volunteered her services to "Meals on Wheels" and delivered many meals over a period of ten years. Her customers were always complimentary of her cheerful demeanour and willingness to chat about any subject. During the 44 years together, Carol enjoyed trips to Europe, several islands of the Caribbean, Hawaii, and many states of USA both on vacation with their sons and occasionally accompanying Glenn on business travel. Two cruises, one to Greece and the Greek Islands, and another to Mexico, Honduras and Belize were experiences she cherished. A great joy in her life was the opportunity to care for her only grandson Quinn over a continuous period of 3-4 years. We wish to thank the many doctors and staff of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Foothills Hospital who provided the utmost in professional care. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Monday, September 24, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 - 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 (Telephone 1-866-412-4222. www.albertacancer.ca/ memorial). In living memory of Carol Smith, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
