Athens - Carol Jean Fisher, 76, of Athens, Ga., died Sat., Feb. 6, 2010, after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucile Geary Fisher and father, Lyman Wright Fisher.Born on April 22, 1933 in Jackson, Mich., she graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1951. After graduation, she earned her undergraduate degree at The Ohio State University, her Master's degree in Education at Bowling Green State University in 1960, and her Ph.D. in Education in 1972 at The Ohio State University. She taught for 24 years in the School of Teacher Education at The University of Georgia and was the Department Chair of the Department of Language Education when she retired in 1996.She was a strong advocate of higher education, teaching upper division undergraduate courses and split-level graduate/undergraduate courses. She had professional publications including a lengthy chapter about language arts and reading for the revision of the Handbook on Research of Teacher Education. Carol was passionate about continuing education and was active in and supported Learning in Retirement after her retirement from UGA.Her memorial service will be held on February 27, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of the Lord and Stephens Funeral Home (East Side, 4355 Lexington Road), Athens, Ga.In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to: 1) the Univ. Of GA Foundation Carol J. Fisher Scholarship in Language Education #40-S4320; 2) ARCH Foundation College of Education Support Fund #A881080 at the Univ. of GA; or 3) the charity of your choice.
