Carmen J. "Mother" Torres, 87, died Aug. 9, 2012 at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital with her family by her side.She was born Jan. 10, 1925 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, to parents Carlos Juarbes and Maria Torres Velez. She, along with her family, moved to Fort Myers , Fla., and later settled in Newburgh in 1962.Carmen was known as "Mother" to all who knew her. She loved to cook and her Puerto Rican meals were cherished, especially her "pasteles." She enjoyed "jibarito" and country music, country Westerns and nature. "Mother" was also a passionate patriot of her native Puerto Rico and an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Parish.Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Celestino H. Serrano Torres; 11 children, Maria D. Alvarez, Efrain Serrano, Milagros Garcia, Sonia Harvey, Beatrice Serrano, Francisco Serrano , Carlos Serrano, Oscar Serrano, Rolando Serrano, Orlando Serrano and Carmen Hansen; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; four siblings, Arcelia Juarbes, Golin Juarbes, Elba Iris Juarbes and "Pucho" Juarbes; and 14 nieces and nephews.Preceding her in death were a daughter, Santa Serrano, and siblings Ana Juarbes, Minerva Juarbes and Maximino Juarbes.Carmen's homecoming will take place Monday, Aug. 13, at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., in Newburgh. Visitation will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and a funeral service will follow from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in New Windsor.
