MITCHELL Carl D. Mitchell, 65, of Fernandina Beach, Fl., passed away unexpectedly Friday evening at his residence. He was born in Jacksonville, Fl., the son of the late Charles Augustus Mitchell and Bernice Daniel Mitchell of Nassau County. He attended Hilliard High School graduating in the class of 1960 and then enrolled in South Georgia College in Douglas, Ga. During that time he worked at the Gibbs Shipyard in Jacksonville, Fl. In 1964 he met and married his wife of 43 years, the former Sallie Butler of Bolougne, Fl. In 1966 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany until his discharge in 1969. Returning to Nassau County, he joined the Rayonier Timber Division and trained in the Surveying Department. He eventually received his license to practice in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. In the early 1970's, he left Rayonier after 16 years and established Carl D. Mitchell and Associates Surveyors. He was twice President of the Florida Crown Chapter of Land Surveyors and was an officer in the Florida Professional Land Surveyors. He was a Methodist by faith. He leaves behind his wife Sallie B. Mitchell, his brother Charles A. (LaNell) Mitchell, Jr. of Callahan, Fl., his sister Patricia M. Sparkman of Fernandina Beach, Fl., Many nieces and nephews and his beloved and faithful companion - Jack Russell Terrier, ZOE. The family received friends on Monday from 5 - 7 pm. Funeral services with military honors will be on Tuesday, March 18th , at 5pm in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Home with Rev. Brett Opalinski officiating.
