Calvin Coolidge Henderson passed away Sept. 16, 2008, at the age of 85. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Morgan Funeral Chapel. Robbie Edwards will officiate.Mr. Henderson will be buried in the Gum Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, in St. Clair County. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Cross or Holt International (www.holtintl.org). Pallbearers will be family and friends. Visitation tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at Morgan Chapel.Calvin was born in Slasham, St. Clair County, on Aug. 25, 1923, to Thomas Richard and Jo Ella Jackson Henderson. His mother died when he was 3, leaving his father to raiseÊEstelle, Ted, Calvin and Earl. Calvin was the last surviving child of Thomas and Jo Ella.Calvin lived his entire life in northeast St. Clair and Etowah counties. He graduated from Ashville High School in 1942, and immediately went to work for Goodyear in Gadsden. Calvin joined the U.S. Army in 1942, and participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, coming home in 1945 after being injured in Belgium. After recovery, he returned to Goodyear, where he would eventually retire after 42 years of service. Calvin was a member of First Baptist Church of Rainbow City.Calvin married Carolyn Walker in 1955 (deceased in 2003). He often claimed she was the best looking woman in the county. Calvin and Carolyn built a house on his farm in the Hopewell community on Rainbow Drive.He and Carolyn raised four children - Terry, Jo Ella, Charles and John. Calvin put them all through college.Over the years, Calvin served Hopewell Baptist Church as Sunday School teacher and deacon. He also served as an elected trustee for the Ashville schools system.ÊCalvin never forgot the kindness generous residents of the community showed toward his family through the hard times of the Depression.He loved the history of the countryside and people around Canoe Creek, Slasham, Beaver Valley and Ashville. He enjoyed walking and talking through the old family burying grounds at Hopewell and Gum Springs.ÊCalvin is survived by children, Terry (Kathy), Headland, Jo Ella (Gary) Hood, Ashville, Charles (Alison), Trenton, Ga., and John (Teresa), Madison. Grandchildren are Anna Lee (Gabe) Martin, Panama City, Fla., Rebecca Henderson, Headland, Cody, Zane and Jed Henderson, Trenton, Ga., Nathan, Thomas, and Catherine Henderson, Madison.
