Bobby Joe Smith, 64, of 202 Ellington Drive, died Dec. 1, 2001, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Glenn Springs Community of Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late John Franklin and Earline Thornton Smith and was a 1957 graduate of Spartanburg High School. He retired in 1994 as captain in District 1 of the South Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources with over 25 years of service. He was a member of the Anderson Mill Road Baptist Church having held leadership roles both in his church and in the community and had received numerous awards. He was an Eagle Scout, a certified diver, a Mason and a Shriner, and had served in the U.S. Navy, was an avid hunter and fisherman. Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Mary Elizabeth "Butch" Richerson Smith of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela Smith Gregory and Harold Edwin Gregory of Moore and Tracy Smith Gregory and Michael Shane Gregory of Boiling Springs; two grandchildren, Joey Gregory of Moore and Taylor Gregory of Boiling Springs; one brother and sister-in-law, J. Frank and Elizabeth Smith of Roebuck; one sister, Mrs. Jack (Barbara) Sullivan of Clinton; two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carey Nelson Smith. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at 3 p.m. at the Anderson Mill Road Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Keith A. Bradsher. Interment will follow in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends today from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Lanford-Pollard Funeral Home and they will be at the home at 202 Ellington Drive in Vanderbilt Hills. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the Anderson Mill Road Baptist Church, 4455 Anderson Mill Road, Moore, SC 29369. Lanford-Pollard Funeral Home, Spartanburg, is in charge of arrangements.
