Retired Clerk AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest at The Place at Martinez on Sunday, February 8, 2009, Mrs. Betty Payne Smith, wife of the late David Smith, Sr. of Augusta. Betty lived all of her life in Augusta. She was the daughter of the late Carl and Lucille Widener Payne. She was a Baptist, a member of the Jack & Jill Bowling League, a member of the Augusta GreenJacket Diamond Club, and an avid Bingo player. She worked for the Otasco Stores and Wal-Mart. Survivors: three sons, David Smith, Jr. and wife Annette, Lincoln County, Ga., Carl Smith and wife Pam, Augusta, Byron Smith and wife Nancy, Hephzibah; one brother, Charles Robert "Bobby" Payne, Columbus, Ga.; one sister, Barbara Payne DeLaughter, North Augusta; seven grandchildren, Holley Prendergast, David Smith, III, Leah O'Byrne, Heather Bozeman, Mary K. Smith, Erin Smith, Heath Smith; and eight great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the Thomas L. King Funeral Home Chapel at 1 p.m. with Rev. Dewain French officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Family will receive friends on Tuesday night at the funeral home between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. Pallbearers: Bobby Bozeman, Heath Smith, Stevie Prendergast, Robert Harper, David Smith, III, and Dan Kosabucki.
