SKOWHEGAN -- Betty Natalie (Cowette) Mitchell, 72, of Skowhegan, passed away Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at her home in Skowhegan with her son, daughter and daughter-in-law at her side.She was born Jan. 30, 1938, in Kingsbury Plantation, the daughter of Amos Cowette and Avis M. (Ward) Curtis.Betty graduated from Harmony High School as valedictorian in the class of 1956. While she was in high school, she enjoyed playing basketball.She worked for the area shoe shops as a hand sewer for many years. She also worked as a lab technician for Redington-Fairview General Hospital for seven years.Betty occasionally went to Las Vegas and Foxwoods, Conn. She loved spending time with her family, and she also liked reading historical fiction romance novels; she also loved Christmas. She was an excellent cook, and it had to be from scratch. Betty was known for her independence. Whatever she chose to undertake, she always perseveredShe is survived by her two children, RenŽe Johnson of Augusta, and Todd Mitchell and his wife, Judy, of Dexter; one sister, Leone Everett, of Skowhegan; three brothers, Shirley Cowette and his companion, Nellie Buzzell, of Wellington, Clair Cowette and his companion, Rhoda Chadbourne, of Palmyra, and Levi Cowette and his wife, Lucy, of Wellington; three grandchildren, Joshua Mitchell and his wife, Jessariss, of Sacramento, Calif., Teresa Mitchell and her fiancŽ, Danny, of Ripley, and Traci Mitchell and her fiancŽ, Justin, of Dexter; three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Mayla and Allie; and many nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by her mother and father; first husband, Earl Mitchell; step-father, Stanley Curtis; and brother Rodney Cowette.The family would like to thank Health Reach Hospice for their wonderful care and the Road to Recovery for the transportation to her treatments in Augusta.The family would also like to extend a special thanks to friends and family members for the transportation to medical appointments, and especially Rick Thornley Jr. who was never more than a phone call away. The family truly appreciates everyone who dedicated themselves to fulfilling Betty's wishes of remaining at home during her illness.Viewing hours will be held on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at Mount Rest Cemetery in Athens.Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home.
