Butler, Ga. - Betty (Smith) Mitchell, 91, formerly of Pawcatuck, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins, Ga.Born Velma Brown Beames on Aug. 15, 1921, in South Gilboa, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Bertha Kenyon Brown Beames and the late Arthur William Bird. She was the beloved stepdaughter of the late George Thomas Smith, whose name she took in her teen years.At age 16, she graduated as salutatorian from Stamford (N.Y.) Central School with the class of 1937. After completing nurse's training at The Westerly Hospital in 1939, she was employed in the offices of Dr. J.B. Warren and Dr. David Cohen. She married the late William Albert Mitchell in Westerly, on Sept. 23, 1944. In 1979, she retired with Mr. Mitchell, a former Day reporter, (1950-1979) to Leesburg, Fla. and later relocated to Butler, Ga. in 2006.She was a homemaker and a master of the needle arts. For many years, she taught traditional techniques of rug braiding through the Stonington Adult Education Program. Her creative work was frequently entered into competition at the Stonington Village Fair and the North Stonington Agricultural Fair. In her lifetime, countless men, women, and children were warmed and comforted by her afghans, quilts, hats, mittens, sweaters, and jackets.She is survived by her children, William T. Mitchell (Paula Alice) of St. Mary's City, Md., David H. Mitchell (Christine Johnston) of Duncan, Okla., and Andrew J. Mitchell (Judith Jamieson) of Pomfret Center; her close friend and caregiver, Nancy Sharpe of Butler, Ga.; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Daniel P. Mitchell; and her granddaughter, Jennifer (Mitchell) Vaillencourt.Memorial contributions may be made to the Heroes Fund/Houston Health Care Charitable Giving Program, Houston Medical Center, 1601 Watson Boulevard, Warner Robins, GA 31093.Graveside services are scheduled for September at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.
