MITCHELL, Betty Betty Mitchell passed away in Campbell River Hospital Monday February 17, 2014 in her 90th year. She is survived by a large family who loved her dearly and will miss her greatly. Her husband, Clarence predeceased her in 2012. Left behind to remember are: Dale (Joanne) Mitchell of Vernon, BC, Marion (JR Kuster) Gonsky of Campbell River, Jerry (Doreen) Mitchell of Port McNeill, and Bob (Lil) Mitchell of Saratoga Beach, BC, eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Betty was born in Grand Forks, BC to Mary and Gerry Harpur of Rock Creek, eldest of three children. She had a happy childhood through the Depression Years, often remarking that, while they didn't have much in worldly goods in those years, they never went hungry. There was always lots of work to do on the farm and she shared work and play with her sister, Joan and brother Bill, who have predeceased her. After high school, Betty returned to the farm, where she met Clarence Mitchell, whom she would marry in 1947. Finding work took Clarence and Betty and their growing family to the coast in 1949, and after trying several locations, settled in Campbell River in 1959. Betty ran a happy home, and for over forty years, their house on Vargo Road was a stopping off place for a wide variety of family, friends and assorted strays. Everybody was welcome and most were repeat visitors to Betty and Mitch's. Betty enjoyed a good and long retirement with Mitch. They camped and travelled when the mood struck them. Betty would never turn down a car (or truck) ride. She enjoyed volunteering with the Ladies' Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop and worked there for over twenty years, into her mid-eighties, when her health just wouldn't let her do it anymore. Betty's character exemplified caring and respect for her fellow human beings. After a private farewell, her ashes (and Clarence's) will be returned, by their wishes, to the farm where she grew up. . "You can take the girl from the farm, but you can't take the farm from the girl." . Betty and her family were so appreciative of the support we received from Dr. Prinsloo and all the staff at the CR General Hospital. We would try to name them all but might forget one so please share the appreciation. Betty really wanted to adopt Zach and take him home with her. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Campbell River Hospital Auxiliary would be appreciated.
