Decatur<!--Decatur-->Funeral for Betty Jo Pisarczyk Atkinson, 79, of Decatur will be today, March 14, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Terry Greer officiating. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Atkinson, who died Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, was born May 1, 1929, in Walsenburg, Colo., to Andrew O. and Pearl Arnold Pisarczyk. Her Polish grandparents entered the U.S. in the mid 1800s and established one of the first homesteads in the Colorado territory. She did her under graduate work at Colorado State University and graduated from Athens State College with degrees in Textiles and English. She taught English at Oak Park Middle School and Decatur High School, retiring in 1988. Mrs. Atkinson was a member of First United Methodist Church of Decatur and member of the Wesley Sunday school class. She was a Kappa Delta Sorority Alumnus and served on the Women's Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the Saturday Club, Happy Heart Quilters and Friends of the Library. Survivors include her husband, James B. Atkinson Jr.; two sons, Dr. James B. Atkinson III (Debbie) of Nashville, Tenn., and Dr. Scott Edmund Atkinson (Jane Ann) of Tuscaloosa; daughter, Anne Atkinson Peterson BSN, MSN, RN (Michael) of Nashville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren, James B. Atkinson IV, Elizabeth Atkinson, Scott E. Atkinson Jr., Brook Atkinson and William A. Peterson. Pallbearers will be James B. Atkinson III, James B. Atkinson IV, Michael Peterson, Will Peterson, Scott E. Atkinson and Scott E. Atkinson Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Decatur.
