-->Betty Jo Cooksey Davis SPARTANBURG, SC-- Betty Davis, 83, of Spartanburg, died Friday, March 28, 2008, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home after an extended illness. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the widow of Paul Dupree Davis, Sr. after 48 years of marriage. Born March 7, 1925, in the Cannons Campground community, she was the youngest of nine children born to the late Mary Waldrop and Eber Dexter Cooksey. Betty grew up on a farm, graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1942, and went to work at Drayton Mills to support the war effort. She was a lifelong member of Cannons Campground United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School classes and Vacation Bible School. For several years, she and her sisters operated Joe's Grill, a popular community gathering place. At home, she brought family and friends together through countless Sunday dinners. Even during her illness, Betty continued to share love and joy with those around her with a ready laugh, a warm hug, or a peaceful smile. She is survived by two sisters, Lucille C. Fitzgerald and Mamie C. Davis of Spartanburg; her daughter, Norma Davis McCraw, also of Spartanburg; and her son, Paul Dupree Davis, Jr. of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Michelle Rankin Pemberton, Margaret Rankin Proctor, and Melissa Ann Nelson of Spartanburg; Tinsley Hayes Davis of Boston, MA; and Paul Dupree Davis, III of Washington, DC; and two great-grandchildren, Clayton Hill Shirley and James Hampton Proctor of Spartanburg. Visitation will be 2:00-2:45 PM on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Cannons Campground United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM at the Church, conducted by the Rev. Douglas Gilliland. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
