Betty Ann Brown Smith, 88 YORK -- Betty Ann Brown Smith, 88, a homemaker and retired dental hygienist died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones in York, on April 4, 2013. She and her husband Stanton, spent winters at their home in York and summers at their cottage on Sebago Lake in Windham. Born in Portland, she was the daughter of Edwin C. Brown and Edith Wheeler Brown who resided in Portland and Sebago Lake Village. There, Betty graduated from high school in 1942. After high school, she became a dental assistant to her future father-in-law, Dr. Cheever Smith in Westbrook. She then went on to attend Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene in Boston, Mass., where she graduated in 1948. In June of 1950, she married Stanton T.I. Smith and they lived in St. Louis, Mo., for five years where she worked as a dental hygienist. Longing for New England, they moved to Andover, Mass., where she again practiced dental hygiene. Finally moving back home to Maine in 1980, Betty spent years volunteering at the York Hospital Gift Shop and was also a member of the York Garden Club. Most recently, she enjoyed lunching with friends at Norma's restaurant. She is survived by her husband Stanton of 62 years; her son Stephen Neil Smith, his wife Michelle Desrochers Smith, and their two children, Amy Rae and Kevin Gary of Berwick; and her daughter Rae Ellen Smith Goulart and her husband Geoffrey Parker Goulart of Parsonsfield. A son, Gary Stanton Smith died at age 16 in 1971. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews in Southern Maine and New Hampshire. There are no visiting hours. A private graveside service was held on April 9, 2013, at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook. Arrangements made by Dolby Funeral Chapels.
