She was born January 6, 1928 in Shelbyville, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas L. Bush and Birdie Uselton Bush of Shelbyville, TN; sister, Violet Bush Baker of Nashville, TN; brothers, Leighton Bush and Thomas Bush of Shelbyville, TN.She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Cecil E. Ward, Jr. of Brentwood; children, Lisa M. Ward-Smith and Scott Smith of Franklin, TN; grandson, Hunter Ward Smith; brother-in-law, Jack Ward of Tulsa, OK; sisters-in-law, Shirley Ward Woodard of Mount Juliet, TN and Peggy Jane Bush of Shelbyville, TN; many cousins, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.Bessie graduated from Central High School, Shelbyville, TN in 1946. She then moved to Nashville to begin a career in state government with the State of Tennessee in the Department of Employment Security with Research & Statistics. She graduated from the IBM Tech Institute in Nashville, TN in 1952. She retired after 40 years of service in 1993. As a member of Crievewood Baptist Church for over 50 years, Bessie was the Church Hostess and served as Kitchen Supervisor and cook for over 10 years. She was active in the Children's Department, VIPS, and the Nurture Team. She was a member of the Joy Class. Bessie was artistically creative excelling in smocking, knitting, French lace, and crocheting. In 1993, she was awarded the Sweepstakes Trophy at the Tennessee State Fair in Children's Clothes Sewing. She was also known for her Coconut and Caramel Cakes. She also had a green thumb for gardening. Bessie was a long-time member consulting rosarian and Historian of the Nashville Rose Society as well as a member of the American Rose Society. In 2012, the ARS presented her with the Bronze Honor Medal for Outstanding Service. As a Master Gardener with the Davidson County Master Gardeners, she participated in many local programs. She was also a member of the Davidson County Perennial Society and Cheekwood Botancial Garden & Museum of Art.Visitation will be held from four until seven o'clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 29th of October, 2013 at Crievewood Baptist Church, 480 Hogan Rd. Nashville, TN. The Celebration of Life Service will be held at eleven o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 30th of October, 2013 at the church with visitation held one hour prior to the service. Interment to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the Battle Ground Academy Music Department or Crievewood Baptist Church.
