Bertha M. Age 82, of 4394 Mac Intyre Road, Mecklenburg, passed away at the Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility in Montour Falls on Sunday, May 19, 2002. Born February 18, 1920 in Newfield, New York, Bertha was the daughter of Emil E. and Eva Nara Maki. Bertha graduated from the Newfield High School in 1937 and was married to George H. Russell on December 12, 1941. Bertha assisted with the operation of the family farm in Mecklenburg before she and George established G.H. Russell Auto Sales, also located in Mecklenburg. She was instrumental in the success of their business over the years. As a Charter Member of the Mecklenburg Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, Bertha devoted countless hours to their fundraisers and activities. She was also a member of the Finger Lakes Finns Assn., the Trumansburg Senior Citizens and the Schuyler County Senior Citizens. Bertha was fond of animals, enjoyed cooking and could often be found tending her flower and vegetable gardens. On Monday afternoons however, nothing interrupted the standing engagement with her card-playing club. Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, George, a son, Kenny, two brothers, Eugene and Elmer Maki and a sister, Viena Neimi. She is survived by 2 sons, Gary J. (Karen) Russell of Mecklenburg and Jay D. (Valerie) Russell of Mecklenburg; a daughter-in-law, Ann Russell of Trumansburg; 6 grandchildren, Ben, Joe, Sam, Josh, Erica and Kendra; a great-grandson, Geoffrey; 2 sisters, Violet Paige of Mecklenburg and Velma Hill of Waverly; several nieces and nephews and many friends. The family will be present to receive their friends at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, and from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. In keeping with Bertha's wishes, funeral services will be private. Contributions in Bertha's memory may be directed to the Mecklenburg Fire Co. Rescue Squad, P.O.
