SMITH Barbara Ann (nee Kiefer), 68, of Hasbrouck Heights passed away on September 10, 2013. Born in Hackensack to the late Alfred W. and Carolyn B. Kiefer. Barbara was Valedictorian of her high school class, attended Bucknell University where she excelled academically and received her Masters Degree at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck. Before retiring in 2013, Barbara was an E.S.L. teacher at the Grant Elementary School in Ridgefield Park for fifteen years. She was instrumental in the school's successful application and award as a Blue Ribbon district in 2010 and she was voted Teacher of the Year in 2011. With her professional background, Barbara recognized the need for community based E.S.L. services and developed one of these programs at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Hasbrouck Heights which later included other "Care on the Corner" ministries. Barbara was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hasbrouck Heights where she served six years on the church council with one year as vice-president. She served as a past president of the Kiwanis Club in Hasbrouck Heights, an organization whose mission is "to change the world one child and one community at a time". She was inducted into the Hasbrouck Heights High School Hall of Fame for her academic excellence, has served on the Hasbrouck Heights Board of Health from 2007-2013 and was a member of the Friends of the Library in Hasbrouck Heights.. Barbara has always shared her love of music, whether playing the piano or singing in the choir, her lovely voice raised to God's glory. More recently, she has been playing the piano at the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, lifting the spirits of both the patients and staff. In 2013, Barbara was honored at the Bergen County Council of Churches. Beloved wife to the late Seward Smith, former wife to Reverend Richard W. Horn and a friend to James Finn. Devoted mother of Kristina Horn of Jersey City and Katherine Kelly and her husband Dennis of Hasbrouck Heights. Loving grandmother to Barbara (Bobbi) Kelly and Steven Kelly. Step-mother to David B. Smith and his wife Olga of Cresskill and Valerie Barber of Dumont. Step-grandmother to Austin and Andrew Barber. Funeral from Costa Memorial Home Boulevard and Central Ave. Hasbrouck Heights on Saturday at 10 AM. Funeral Service at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Hasbrouck Heights at 11 AM. Reverend Susan Nelson-Colaneri officiating. Private cremation will follow. Visitation Friday 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
