->Groton - Barbara Stanton Sherman, 90, died on March 2, 2010, at Groton Regency Center, Groton, after a brief illness.Barbara was born on Sept. 13, 1919, in New London. She was the daughter of the late Laurence Greenleaf Sherman and Sarah Mehitabel (Stanton) Sherman. As a child, she lived in Wethersfield and Waterford. She was a resident at Grasso Gardens in Groton for over 20 years.Barbara graduated from the Williams School in New London in 1937, and attended her 72nd High School reunion in August of 2009, and Radcliff University in Cambridge, Mass.Barbara worked as a civil servant for the U.S. Government in Boston, Mass., Japan, India, and France after World War II. After returning to the U.S., Barbara was a contributing writer for local publications, and was a court reporter for The Day for many years. A lifelong student, Barbara attended many classes at Connecticut College and the former Mohegan Community College. She especially enjoyed the sciences, including geology, astronomy and oceanography. She also collected books, with a personal library of over 3000 books. She enjoyed gardening and was interested in family genealogy.She is survived by her niece, Lois Black, her husband, Timothy Black; great niece, Hannah Black and great nephew, Matthew Black, all of Marlborough, Mass.She is predeceased by her brother, Stanton Meech Sherman.A gathering to celebrate Barbara's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, at Grasso Gardens Community Room in Groton.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Yale University School of Medicine, Teaching and Research, 300 Cedar Street, P.O.
