Barbara Brett Sanders of Brooksby Village, Peabody, died on February 11 at age 92 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Agnes Baldwin Brett and George Monroe Brett, and was born in New York City on March 5, 1920. Barbara graduated from Wellesley College in 1942. She was a longtime resident of Marblehead, and was the widow of Thomas Sanders Jr, her husband of 40 years who predeceased her in 1994. She leaves behind a beloved family, her daughters Jane Sanders of Lee, N.H., and Martha Sanders of Topsfield; her son-in-law Mark Liptak, and grandsons Cary Liptak and Alexander Liptak of Topsfield. Barbara moved to Marblehead in 1950, where she lived until her move to Brooksby Village in 2009. For much of her adult life she was actively involved in charitable or volunteer work. In 1958 she was one of four founders of the Lighthouse Exchange Thrift Shop in Marblehead established to raise funds for the MSPCC in Salem. She was the chairperson of the Hamilton Hall Lecture Series in the 1960s, and a longtime member of the Thread and Needle Society of Salem. For several years she was a volunteer assistant in the Reading Room of the Phillips Library. A skilled genealogist, she studied New England colonial family history, particularly the Sanders family of Maine, Gloucester, and Salem, and had several articles published in The Essex Genealogist and The Maine Genealogist. She has written a book documenting the life of John Sanders of Ipswich and his descendants, which her children hope to compile and publish. Barbara and her husband, Tom, an avid sailor, enjoyed sailing and racing in the Bullseye fleet out of Marblehead Harbor for 22 years. She will also be remembered for her skill as a bridge player, her love of animals, her great sense of humor and her upbeat and kind spirit. She loved people and took an interest in everyone she came in contact with. She read extensively, was bright and articulate, and loved good conversation. Barbara was devoted to and much loved by her family and friends, and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A memorial service will take place at Old North Church in Marblehead on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to The Marcia Wiswall Lindberg Genealogy Room at the Lynnfield Public Library.
