She was an avid hockey fan and an enthusiastic follower of the Cornell University Big Red hockey team. But most of all, she loved her family and friends and kept in constant contact with a large network of siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews and her cherished son and daughter. Barbara is survived by her husband, Jon Powers, at home, whom she married Sept. 14, 2002; her parents, Winifred and Eric W. Peterson of Bradenton, Fla; a son, Dr. John T. Whelan and a daughter, Susan J. Whelan, both of Rochester; two sisters, Alice Sheridan of Bronwood, Ga. and Janis Kipp of Fishkill; three brothers: Will Peterson of Anchorage, Alaska, Eric Peterson of Tega Cay, S.C. and Christopher Peterson of Tierra Verde, Fla; her favorite niece, Kristen Robisch of Cortlandt Manor; five nephews, Douglas Newman of Chesapeake, VA; Brian Kipp of Charlotte, N.C.; David Peterson of Anchorage, Alaska; Ric Peterson of Tega Cay, S.C. and Christopher Peterson of Tierra Verde, Fla. and many cousins. Barbara's birth father, 2nd Lt. Lloyd Kent, U.S. Army/Air Force, was killed in action over the South China Sea during World War II. A memorial service to celebrate Barbara's life and indomitable spirit will be held for family and friends on Tuesday, March 22 at 2 p.m. at A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Avenue, Kingston. Burial of her ashes will be private and at the convenience of the family. Barbara, with her feisty spirit and wonderful sense of humor, will be sorely missed by her family and friends who loved her.
